Member Spotlight! Nick Emmett

Another edition of our HRR Member Spotlight, where we get to know the runners behind the blue and white vest!

What first got you into running?

I’d always liked running, but every time I went out I sprinted as fast as I could. Hoping there was a better way to train, I joined a run club around the 2012 Olympics and haven’t looked back.

What do you love most about running?

I love being able to put on a pair of trainers and get out exploring, no matter where I am.

What’s your favourite distance or type of run?

For road races it’s the half marathon. There’s something about the mix of speed and endurance needed that creates a worthy challenge. Off-road, I’d say the longer the better and leave the pace expectation at home!

What has been your biggest challenge so far?

I spent years trying to break the horribly arbitrary 4-hour marker in the marathon. As a runner on the larger side, the distance was always a killer towards the back half. I slimmed down, trained properly and finally got there on my 4th attempt, finishing side by side with another HRR member.

What’s your next running goal?

In the short term I’ve got some unfinished business with 5 & 10k races. For 2027, I’m plotting out some much longer distance events after being indoctrinated by the growing gang of ‘HRR Ultras’.

What keeps you motivated?

Seeing the effort that people in HRR and the wider running community put into their training. We’ve all got jobs and other things going on in our lives but seeing people putting in the miles, turning up to improve themselves and take on new challenges is just something I want to be part of. Kudos to the coaches for volunteering their time to help us all do that.

“Seeing the effort that people in HRR put into their training just makes me want to be part of it.”
