What first got you into running?

My dad’s a runner and I’d always enjoyed jogging a bit, but before joining HRR I’d only ever raced 5km and most of my running was a chatty walk/jog with friends.

After trying a couple of parkruns and meeting Osama at HRR, I plucked up the courage to join an HRR social run and ended up running my first 10km in February this year.

What do you love most about running?

I love getting into that rhythm. However crazy the day has been with work, children and everything else, I know I’ll feel amazing after a run. I love what it does for both my mind and body. It’s such a good way of relieving stress and putting life into perspective.

I’ve met some wonderful people through HRR and made some really lovely friends. Also, getting to explore the wonderful countryside with the great variety of running routes on offer.

What’s your favourite distance or type of run?

I love a 5km parkrun, but my favourite race so far was my first 10-miler. I ran it very slowly, but absolutely loved it! I’m now training for the Fleet Half Marathon, which will be my longest distance yet.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Probably getting my body used to running three or more times a week along with the gym after starting properly in my forties!

Initially I didn’t rest enough between runs for my fitness level. I had some muscle pain and needed a few sports massages, but gradually I’ve become much stronger and better conditioned.

What’s your proudest running achievement?

Breaking an hour at the third Yateley 10K this year. I’d tried on the first two races and went off too fast, so I was delighted to finally get my pacing right, run a negative split and finish under the hour.

Next target: improving on it at the Fleet 10km!

What advice would you give someone thinking about joining HRR?

Just do it! HRR is incredibly welcoming and genuinely caters for all abilities. I went from having only run 5km to completing my first 10km on my first social run, with loads of encouragement along the way.

There are so many inspirational runners who have achieved amazing things, the training is brilliant, and it’s amazing value for everything the club offers.
